GameFly.com vs GameznFlix.com

The Battle For My Game Rental Dollar

Like my subtitle? I spent 40 minutes thinking that baby up :-)
Anyway, back on topic, I've been using GameznFlix for almost a year now. For the last 8 or 9 months their shipping times have been very streaky. When I fist signed up they would ship me new games within a day or two of returning the previous one. However, on a couple occasions it has been 4 weeks between game shipments. When they do eventually get around to shipping me something it generally takes 4 or 5 days to get to me even though they ship from here in California.

I think part of the problem is that I signed up the same time as they started a big marketing campaign that added a lot of new customers. With all these new members they do not have enough copies of each game to go around. I will admit I generally only have 3 or 4 games in my queue and most of them are fairly new; so that probably does not help. Frankly, that is not really my problem. I'm paying for a service and I expect it to be provided. I really like the price, but now that my queue is getting pretty small I'm thinking of switching to GameFly even though it costs a bit more. I have 0 games out with GameznFlix right now, but nothing has been shipped to me in over 6 weeks.

I signed up for the 10 day free trial from GameFly on Sunday a couple weeks back and Monday they shipped me Lost Planet and Tony Hawk Project 8; both arrived in two days. Both games have been in my queue with GameznFlix since their release with a Short Wait status while I have zero games out. It seems like GameznFlix just doesn't have enough copies of most games. So, I guess the question really comes down to “Am I really saving any money if it takes 3 or 4 times as long to get games from GameznFlix as it would from GameFly?”

I think the answer to that, at least for me, is No. What good is it to save 5 dollars a month if I never have any games to play?

So, I’m going to cancel my GameznFlix membership and continue with GameFly. In my experience GameFly has quicker shipping time frames and more of each game in stock. GameFly shipped me Lost Planet the day after it was released. Two weeks later GameznFlix still has not shipped it. GameFly also has a much nicer website/interface. It loads quicker, it lets me stay logged in between visits, and it has a very nice search feature. None of these things by themselves are really that noticeable, but when you see the difference as a whole it is really evident. Also, GameFly has partnered with the USPS so as soon as the Post Office scans a game you are returning GameFly is notified and begins the process of shipping you another game. This way you don't have to wait as long between games. In my experience this cuts 2 to 3 days of the shipping times.

Finally, GameFly will let you invite your friends to join and then give them a discount on the monthly cost if they do. That is pretty nice. If you’re thinking of signing up with GameFly you can get the discount as well by using this link: GameFly Invite.

So, here is a quick breakdown of how this weighs out for me.
GameFly.com Benefits
* Wider selection of games
* Games ship out faster
* Better website design
* Better queue management

GameznFlix.com Benefits
* Lower monthly cost
* Rents movies as well (which I never used)

So, back to my previous question, saving 5 dollars a month is not helping me when I'm sitting at home with no games to play. When I pay for a service I want it to work for me. GameFly may cost a little more but it works for me and that makes it worth the price.

  • Dude you're so right. Gamefly is da best. You spelled out why they're better than their competitors but left out why you should be renting in the first place.

    I'll give you 60 reasons and everyone of them is a dollar. $60 bucks a game these days and if you want to buy a new console or something try stocking it with games once you do.

    Renting makes more and more sense everyday and Gamefly is the only one I've tried to is worth the money. I've been with them for over a year now and gaming has never been better. I admit it, I'm a fan.

  • I was pleased with gamefly.. Except that the shipping time to the east coast was 4 days.. each way.. That meant I was paying more for days and days without any games. GnF is getting one month from me.. but if the service is as terrible as their website it won't go past that..

  • GAMEFLY is horrid. I am out of Michigan and used this service for two months out of the two months I received 4 games. For the most part I returned the games within a day. May work good in the West Coast though? Blockbuster online is wonderful for movies, no complaints at all. For games I really like gamerang.com but a bit more pricey. Wanted to try gameznflix but you guys scary but really like the fact that you could rent bluray and hddvd.

  • I have used both services and have the same problems that most people not on the west coast have. Gameznflix does not have a good stock in most games it seems, although the ship very fast when they do. They didn't have some games on the 360 a few months ago, when there were less than 60 retail games or whatever, but I think they have them now. It is cheaper, but like was said whats the point if it takes sometimes more than a month to get a new game and you don't want anything else. Because the problem for me was I would have taken other games, but if i reqeued up the game I wanted it would start over in queue time so i sat on having 3 games in my queue and having nothing rather than getting bad games and having to start the wait time all over when I'm done with those.

    Gamefly takes a long time to ship a game to me and receive mine, even though I'm in the midwest, not even the east coast. I would think they should at least get 2 more distribution areas instead of the only one they have being on the west coast. They should get one in the midwest, and one on the east coast in addition to the west coast one. Gamezflix has like 8 distribution centers, but it doesn't matter because I would rather wait 4 days to get a game and 4 days to send it if its send within a few days of being on my queue, at their price. But at gamefly's price they need to have the extra distribution centers.

    I currently don't use either service, waiting for the service to improve at either.

    BTW I think gameznflix edits their wikipedia entry (deletes criticism) because I have seen a lot of people complain about the long queue times on xbox.com and other places, way more than gamefly, yet gamefly is the one with all the criticism posted on their wikipedia entry and gameznflix has a lot of positive (some obscure) and no criticism. I would like to see more stuff like you post discussed about these programs so I know when the dust has settled on these issues so I can start renting again.

  • BTW gameznflix is a lot cheaper then gamefly. The author stated you save like $5.00, that is not true. It is more like $13.00 per month. With gameznflix the service is $16.95 for 3 out at a time. Gamefly is $21.95 for 2 out. After three months with gamefly you can have 3 out for around $29.95. (It might be $27 or $28, but still) So you will be paying between $11 to $14 more for the same service.

    Having said this, I have gamefly and have not switched, since I am concerned about gameznflix turnaround time. However why does gamefly have only 2 distribution centers? (They just opened one in Pennsylvania) One is sourly needed in the midwest.

  • GNF is less if you don't have any discounts on GameFly, but even though it cost more GameFly is worth the extra cost.

    Plus, GameFly has partnered with BrightSpot.tv so you can save $10 a month on your GameFly membership.

  • fORGET GETTING VIEDO GAMES FROM GameznFlix!! I have been a member for 6 months and finally quit. The last month they didn't ship me anything (I had 20+ WII games in the queue). I have a WII and even when I had 30-40 WII games in the queue and a few gamecube games after that, the best I woud get is an occasional gamecube game. They also would resend me ones I returned just to send me something. Two out at a time? Bah - I was lucky to get one. GameznFlix was the biggest waste of money.

  • So, I've been a STAUNCH supporter of GamezNFlix for many years...

    The service was great. I had 6 titles out a month for $20/mo (prepaid $249/annual). Things were going GREAT until sometime in October of 2007... when titles stopped shipping as quickly.
    I complained, they'd add a month of free service...
    I had accumulated 4 months of free service in the last year...

    Well, lately, I haven't received a new title since MAY... so I called and complained, got the same **** answer of "We're in the process of ordering new titles" and I have 40 titles in my queue and apparently NONE are available!?

    So I tell them, I want to cancel my service and get a refund as I'm paid through until February of 09 (with all the months of free service they added)

    So, they call me back and say that they're offering a refund for $62.25...
    I tell them that's unacceptable, I haven't had a title in 2 months and I have it paid for 7 months... I expect a refund for 9 months ($180)

    She tells me that they roll back all the 'free months of service' and I'm only getting a refund for July through October (3 months)...

    Now, this isn't some phone lady... this is the VICE PRESIDENT OF COMMUNICATIONS for GamezNFlix... I tell them this is not acceptable and they won't budge...

    I have contested this with the CEO. I hope to get a better refund

  • Gamefly for me is about a 8 day turn around. I live in CT and get them from Pittsburgh. Since Christmas they are f'in horrid though. I've now gone 3 weeks without getting a game sent since I guess nothing is available (12 titles in my q, 4 of which were released in early 07). My #1 game was released in early October and since then has been at the top of my q. Well, I have yet to play it 4 months later. 4 months I've been on the waiting list for this damn game, better be good. Please Gamefly, just send me a game!!!!!
